These tables and charts provide a descriptive analysis of poverty lines for Cape Town households from 2009 to 2023, based on the GHS data provided by Statistics SA.
Notes: Upper-bound poverty line (UBPL) refers to the
food poverty line plus the average amount derived from non-food items of
households whose food expenditure is equal to the food poverty
line.
Lower-bound poverty line (LBPL) refers to the food
poverty line plus the average amount derived from non-food items of
households whose total expenditure is equal to the food poverty
line.)
Food poverty line (FPL) refers to the amount of money
that an individual will need to afford the minimum required daily energy
intake. (Commonly referred to as the “extreme” poverty line.)
Note:the percentage in the above table will not add to 100% because households fall into overlapping categories
