The main dwelling types from the table above are categorised into the
high-level typologies displayed in the table below.
Formal dwellings are made up of:
Dwelling/house or brick/concrete block structure on a separate stand
or yard or on a farm,
Flat or apartment in a block of flats,
Cluster house in complex,
Townhouse (semi-detached house in complex),
Semi-detached house,
Dwelling/house/flat/room in backyard,
Room/flatlet on a property or a larger dwelling servants’
quarters/granny flat.
Informal dwelling in backyard are made up of:
Informal dwelling/shack in backyard.
Informal dwelling NOT in backyard are made up of:
Informal dwelling/shack not in backyard, e.g. in an informal
squatter settlement or on a farm.
Traditional dwelling are made up of:
Traditional dwelling/hut/structure made of traditional
materials.
Other are made up of:
Other, Caravan/tent and Unknown.
4 Average household
size
The table below is also calculated using the Stats SA GHS data, and
is used for the calculations undertaken in the process for the annual
population estimates. It is calculated by taking the
total number of households divided by the household size.
